I chose Julia because she understands my goals. I didn't want to be a super-fit athlete – just wanted to get stronger and more toned, and to lose a few of those pesky kilos. Not terribly difficult goals, but I just wasn't making headway on them by myself. Julia provides me with the motivation I need to continually challenge myself. With her as my trainer, I have cycled 80km in the Taupo cycle challenge, and completed two triathlons. And I am slowly but surely getting rid of those extra few kilos! I look better, I feel better, and I'm healthier than I was a year ago. Thanks, Julia - your support has made all the difference! Cathy Sneyd 2008-2014

“A year from now you will wish you started today. “ – Karen Lamb

When I started my web development business 2 years ago this is the quote that kept me going through the hard times. Now it hangs across from my bed, so it’s the first thing I see every morning and it keeps me motivated.

I started seeing Brooke as my life coach 3 months ago, she inspired me to put that quote on my wall, and not just have it for my business but for everyday life.

I am extremely over weight and have tried all the diets, and they do work. However if you don’t know why you put the weight on in the first place it will come back.

Brooke helps me work out the issues in my life that cause me to over-eat. With her help and a weight watchers diet I have now lost over 10 kgs. For me this is a small step on my weight loss journey, but a huge step forward for where I want to be in a year’s time.

I love meeting up with Brooke and telling her my progress. Unlike family and friends she only wants only what I want to achieve for myself. I also love that there is no pressure, I find it hard to talk to others about my weight, especially my mum.

I have started many journeys before, mainly for others or events. Not a long-term life goal. This time there is no event, and I am not really telling people about my efforts. I am doing this for me, and my thoughts and efforts are the only ones that matter, as its my life and I have to live with it.

Brooke has helped me so much, by learning to take out the negative in my life and go for what I want. A healthy life & body!

Thank you for all you help.  You helped me put things in perspective and inspired me to take action.

Thank you again for your time. It helped keep me positive and I guess the assurance I was doing the right things.

As you know I was skeptical and so was genuinely surprised by the results, it's not one thing that makes the difference for the better it's lots of little lifestyle changes (except perhaps caffeine, I am still shocked at how much impact that has on your body). I do slip more often back to bad habits than not but I always revert back for no other reason than I feel better when I am following your tips. I am more resistant and resilient to stress when my life is more balanced.

I think most people would benefit in some way by your coaching I particularly like the way you approach your role, it's thoughtful and unobtrusive and catered to suit individual lifestyles. It recognizes that different levels of commitment and effort will result in varying degree of results. Lynne Morton 2013

Working with Julia with both life coaching and personal training, she has helped me refocus on what my goals are and continues to push me with new goals and challenges with each session. Being able to bounce ideas and queries off Julia has made me focus on what is important to me and me moving forward with whatever challenges lay ahead in the future. Have really appreciated it and look forward to many more challenges ahead. Thanks heaps. Kat Arnold 29yrs 2013 ongoing

After a year of growing a small business by myself, I reached out to Julia for advice on how to turn it into something more sustainable and profitable. Her ability to listen and offer suggestions was great for me as I could bounce ideas back and forth, and gain clarity on how I could grow my business, while staying true to my beliefs and intentions. Carmille Neslon 2013

When I first contacted Julia I was a lazy, procrastinating, overweight and unhealthily slob.

Julia and I have been meeting regularly since Nov 2011 to deal with these issues.
When we first started, I had no real direction in my life. With Julia’s help and skill, we work through the various issues.
I have to be one of Julia most challenging clients, Julia was patient and supportive.
I now have direction in my life, my house is cleaner, my garden is progressing and I am cooking better meals.
In fact I have discovered that I enjoy cooking; I have being looking at different types of food and trying different recipes.

Thanks Julia. Anil M June 2012 ongoing

I started seeing Julia when I was at a crossroads in my life, and couldn’t decide which way to turn, or where to start. Since meeting with her I have clarified the things that were standing in my way, set myself some goals (with baby-step targets to get me going) and eliminated many of the pressures that were keeping me at a stand-still.

While she claims that I did all the work myself (which I did), her sensible pragmatic approach and appropriate questions and suggestions were the essential ingredients  enabling me to make the changes I needed to make. She doesn’t tiptoe round the hard stuff, and equally she shares in the excitement when something works.

It’s been an enormous pleasure having Julia alongside me at a difficult time. I’m really grateful for her input and for the amazing contribution she has made to moving me forwards. Laurice Gilbert  February 2011

I am very grateful to Julia Brooke of Brooke Consulting.  As a mum, I just felt a bit lost after fifteen years of being everything to everybody; children, husband, parents, in laws.  I now have a bit of space in my life to something for me, but didn't know where to start, Julia is approachable and understanding; just the right mix of empathy and action.  I could share my feelings but also think about how to move forward.  It's been great for me.  Thanks very much.

Thanks again and once again it was great to meet you.  You have a really lovely presence.  People who get to work with you are really lucky! Toni Taylor 2010

I contacted Julia because my life was at a cross roads and I needed some direction. Julia's holistic approach provided the direction I was looking for. She taught me how to live life with passion and it's ok to say 'no'.

Each session I learnt more and more about myself and where I want to be in my life.  I've found my passion in life and am starting to fill that passion with small steps every day. I have far more confidence in myself and am excited about what the future holds for me. Life coaching with Julia was the best investment I ever made. Alice Ryan

As the weeks went by with Julia I could feel the weights lifting off my shoulders.  I became much more focused on the things that I wanted to achieve and could identify and discard those that were holding me back.  It was very useful to have someone check up on me and make sure I was not procrastinating.  I felt like I was achieving things – with far less effort.

Not everyone has the skills to help somebody get to the point where they are clear about what they want and have plans to get there.  Julia does.

I needed help to remove the ‘stuckness’ and move forward in my life and after three sessions with Julia I achieved more than I ever thought possible.  Julia has a holistic approach to people and their lives, which worked wonders.  I initially went to her for help with weight and fitness, but found that I really needed someone to help me clarify the direction of many parts of my life.

I would recommend her to anyone who needs help and support with whatever they are doing. Clare Ludlam.

Everything is interconnected.
The first thing we had to do was to isolate the causes of the stressful state I was in…. relationship with a person with a controlling & addictive personality, loss of an important family loved-one, work as a self-employed person,  many years of unsettled home life in different countries, several health issues that were distressing …..all these things I believed I was coping with. But I really wasn’t.  I was finding it hard to make decisions & felt sad, heavy & dark inside.
You helped me by putting these things “out there” instead of going over & over them in my head so that I couldn’t move on with any action.

I was challenged to try a few new things, build up my self-confidence which had been so damaged.

Small steps, which by doing them (no matter what they were or how relatively easy they would have seemed to other people) helped me to feel in control again. It was your encouragement & proactive advice that started me towards a new life now with an enjoyable job, a new relationship with a gentle, loving & reliable man, happy family times & those relaxing walks to work when I can see the harbour, sea & sky and, most importantly, enjoy the moment!

Thanks to you Julia,  Mary May 06

Cathy’s Story:    HOW A SNAKE BITE CHANGED MY LIFE

For most of this year, my life was spiralling out of control.  One misbehaving teenager, one chronically ill teenager who wasn’t looking after himself, a job that just kept on getting busier, no time to exercise, no time for a holiday – everything just kept on piling up.  Eventually I simply couldn’t cope any more, and went into my own personal cave for a week.  When I came out, still fragile but able to cope once more, I decided that if I didn’t get a holiday with my partner, I was going to self-destruct.  So we booked a whole ten days in a retreat next to a nature reserve several hours drive out of Sydney.

We were so looking forward to the holiday.  Ten days of nature walks, swimming in the river, and generally chilling out.  The first morning, we got up for an early morning walk to look for a platypus.  Didn’t find a platypus, but a snake found me.  A particularly venomous brown snake. It bit me – twice.  Being bitten by a venomous snake isn’t so bad – it’s what comes afterwards that is pretty horrid.  A helicopter ride back to Sydney, 4 days in hospital (2 of them in intensive care), more needles than I like to think about, and a feeling when I got out that I was so damn lucky to still be alive that my life was going to change.

Julia had seen me get more and more stressed all year (working with me as a PT), and had mentioned to me that she also did life coaching.  I knew I needed it, but it was one more thing that I felt I simply didn’t have time for.

When I got back to Wellington, the first thing I did was to talk to Julia.  I still wasn’t up to training – I was waiting on my blood tests to give the all clear – so instead we spent an hour talking about a few of the changes I needed to make.
- Work fewer hours and spend less money
- Return to being a vegetarian
- Learn how to cook
- Watch my son play sport every week
- Spend time every week with my friends
- Go running three times a week

They weren’t resolutions.  They are actions.   They are simply the way I have “chosen” to live my life now.

It’s only been a few weeks, but already I can hardly believe I am the same person I was a few weeks ago.   I feel I have rediscovered the joy of being alive.  The act of taking control over my life again and deciding for myself what is important has made a huge difference to me.  No longer do I feel out of control, stressed, under pressure.  I am serene.  I am in equilibrium.  And, though life’s problems never go away, I can deal with them now.

I got a tattoo on my leg where the snake bit me to remind myself that death may be a single step away, so that I never forget the new me.

So, don’t wait for that snake to bite you.  Make the change now.  Thanks, Julia, for helping me to work out what to do and how to do it!   (Thanks to Cathy Sneyd for sharing this story)
